Description: Dated ca. 1930-1939, this photograph shows Athens High School in Athens County, Ohio. Athens High School graduated its first senior class in 1859 and the current building opened in 1968 in The Plains, which now consists of a merger of The Plains High School, Chauncey-Dover High School, and Athens High School. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Original description reads: "Soldiers and Sailors Monument in campus of Ohio University, erected to the memory of the 2500 men sent from Athens county in the Civil War-Athens county which never had a draft." A plaque on the monument reads: "The people of Athens County erect this monument in memory of those who volunteered as soldiers and sailors in defense of the union and to perpetuate free government." Description: Jacob Lindley was born in 1774 in Pennsylvania. At the age of eighteen he attended Jefferson College, Pennsylvania and later Princeton University, New Jersey, studying theology. In 1803 Lindley moved to Ohio, becoming the pastor of a Presbyterian Church in Waterford. He moved to Athens, Ohio in 1808 after being selected by the first board of trustees of Ohio University to head the university. As the first president of Ohio University he served from 1809-1822. The fireplace mantel pictured in the photograph is from the Lindley House in Athens, Ohio. It is consistent with the Greek revival style that was popular in American architecture during the early 19th century. View on Ohio Memory.
